I gave up and ordered a genuine Brother yellow toner with overnight shipping. That was the first wasted $47. If you buy by sticker price alone, you miss the actual cost per printed page. The TN-473 costs more upfront, but it carries significantly more pages than the TN-471. The TN-471 looks cheaper, but you replace it more often. In our case, buying standard-yield cartridges to save money actually increased our per-page cost and doubled the number of times someone had to open the machine and swap a cartridge.
That matters more than people think. Every cartridge change is a chance for dust to get in, for a chip to misread, or for the machine to be left with its front cover open for twenty minutes. I compared a year of our orders side by side—same machine, same monthly volume, different cartridge choices—and the pattern was obvious. The “cheaper” cartridge was the more expensive habit.
The part everyone skips: the drum is not the printer

- Ask what is NOT included in the price. Compatible toner often comes without chip reliability, without a clean-return policy, and without any coverage if it damages the drum. The vendor who explains those limitations upfront is usually the one worth buying from.
And one extra rule: if print quality stays bad after a fresh cartridge, check the DR-471CL drum before you call anyone. It might save you from buying a printer you don’t need.
Our MFC-L8900CDW is still running fine today. The machine was never the problem. The toner decisions were. And that’s actually good news, because toner decisions are much cheaper to fix than hardware failures.
